Precision Hubless Spur Gear

PIC Design manufacturers fine pitch, precision hubless spur gears in both inch and metric dimensions. In our catalog, you’ll find inch and metric hubless spur gears in a variety of common sizes, many of which are available from stock.  Our hubless spur gears have 0.375” bores, are press-fit and are generally staked to hubs or cluster gears.  They can also be secured to hubs using lock nuts.  If you do not see a gear in the catalog that meets the requirements of your application, please contact us about manufacturing a custom hubless spur gear. We manufacture stainless steel hubless spur gears as well as aluminum and bronze gears to fit your needs.

Suitable for a wide range of products, the following standard hubless spur gear specifications define our catalog inch selection:

  • Material: 303 stainless steel, 2024-T4 aluminum; anodized before gear cutting, bronze alloy 464, and acetal
  • Pressure Angle: 20° pressure angle
  • Quality Level: AGMA Q10 to Q14
  • Standard Diametral Pitch: 24, 32, 48, 64, 72, 80, 96, and 120 pitch
  • Standard Hubless Gear Face Widths: 1/16”, 1/8” and 3/16”
  • Bores: 3/8”

Our metric hubless spur gears offering includes gears manufactured to:

  • Module: 0.25, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.8, and 1.0

  • Metric Bores: 9.525 mm

One method for attaching a hubless gear to a hub or a cluster gear is to use a three-notch staking process.  With this method, three notches are cut parallel with the teeth in the face of the gear at the bore. The gear is then assembled with the hub or cluster gear and material from the mating component is forced into the notches.  The advantages of this assembly method are that the staking keeps the gear from rotating relative to the hub and it also prevents the gear from working off the end of the hub.  These hubs are available in both pin and split type designs.

The hand fit locknut style hub is available in both pin hub and split hub designs.  In this method, the hubless gear is installed on the hub, followed by a washer, and is then secured by tightening down the locknut.  Once the assembly has been completed, the hub is assembled to the shaft using the appropriate method based on the style of the hub.
