PIC Design manufactures fine pitch gearing solutions for a variety of industries including medical and dental equipment, military and defense, laboratory equipment and precision industrial controls. These precision gears are used for precise positioning, indexing and other applications where accuracy and low noise levels are more important than tooth strength and power transmission. We will supply our high-precision gears in quantities from prototype to high-volume production.
Our unparalleled product quality, responsiveness, and technical support provide our customers with solutions to their toughest precision and gearing challenges.

Does your application require something beyond a standard catalog gear? PIC can modify a standard gear or create an entirely new design to meet your needs.
Product Details ShopPIC Design offers standard spur gears designed and manufactured to mount on parallel shafts, adhering to both the Inch system and the Metric System.
Product Details ShopAcetal gears are a cost-effective alternative to metal as they reduce or eliminate lubrication costs and run as quietly as metal gears of higher precision.
Product Details ShopPIC offers anti-backlash gears in spur, worm-wheel, and bevel configurations. They consist of two identical gears assembled to a common hub.
Product Details ShopPIC’s worm gears (or worm wheels) are single-enveloping, i.e. the outside diameter of the worm gear wraps partially around the mating worm.
Product Details ShopRacks are essentially gears with an infinite pitch diameter. PIC offers rectangular and round spur racks in a variety of pitches and materials.
Product Details ShopPIC offers standard right- and left-handed 45 degree helical gears in stainless steel and aluminum.
Product Details ShopBevel gears are conical in form and run on crossed co-planar shafts. PIC offers straight bevel gears, i.e. the teeth have no helix or spiral angle.
Product Details ShopPIC offers stainless steel spur pinions in a solid-on-shaft configuration with small numbers of teeth for higher ratios.
Product Details ShopPIC’s Cluster gears are hubs which have teeth and a journal to accept standard hubless gears in order to mount two gears on the same shaft.
Product Details ShopSeveral hub types are available for use with our hubless gears to facilitate attachment to the shaft. Gear blanks (no teeth) are available.
Product Details ShopPrecision Gear Materials & Types
Our standard gears are made of 303 stainless steel, 2024 aluminum, 464 naval brass and acetal copolymer. We manufacture a variety of high-precision gear types including spur, helical, anti-backlash, worm, and bevel gears. Our machining techniques include CNC and conventional turning, CNC and conventional milling as well as CNC and conventional gear cutting. We are a member of the American Gear Manufacturers Association and are certified to ISO 9002-2015.

Frequently Asked Questions
There are a lot of key considerations for selecting the right material for a particular application. But ultimately, material selection comes down to a three-step process:
- Understanding the requirements of the application
- Identifying potential material(s)
- Determining cost and availability
Helpful Tip: You’ll want to be careful not to over-spec, especially if more economical and suitable material options may be used.
Reference this blog post for more information: Material Selection for High-Precision Mechanical Components
Short for Diametral Pitch, this number determines the number of teeth per inch along the pitch diameter of the gear. This number determines the size of the teeth, the spacing of the teeth, and the theoretical perfect mating distance between two gears.
Gear Ratio Formula: Output Teeth (T2) / Input Teeth (T1)
Example: 30 Teeth / 15 Teeth = 2:1 Gear Ratio
Please reference this blog post for more information: Calculating Gear Ratio
Quality Requirements: How precise the gears need to be and the requirements for backlash, runout, etc.
Backlash requirements: How much backlash is allowable for gears and the center distance between the two gears
Helpful tip: Tolerances stack up from shafts, bearings, and other components in the system.
Gear noise can be caused by:
- Too much backlash
- A smaller pressure angle (14.5 degrees are stronger but louder, 25 is a weaker tooth but quieter, 20 degree pressure angle is the perfect mix of the two and the industry standard)
- Environmental factors.
Helpful Tip: Changing the style of gear can reduce noise.
Premature wear can be caused by:
- Running two gears tighter than normal
- Improper mounting of parts
- Material failures
- Environmental conditions that could cause wear, tear, and deformation

| Gear Type | Shape | Pros | Cons | Application |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spur | Straight Teeth | Easy to make | Noisy at high speeds | Industrial, automotive, aerospace, and medical |
| Helical | Teeth cut at an angle | Quiet and smooth | Creates axial thrust which can require additional support | Medical, gear boxes, positional targeting systems |
| Bevel | Conical-shaped | Efficient and can change direction of power transmission | More intricate to manufacture | Gear boxes, industrial tooling, aerospace, military |
| Worm & Worm Wheel | Screw-like worm meshes with a worm wheel | Compact for large speed reductions | Low efficiency and limited load capacity compared to size | Speed reducers, aerospace, military, medical |
